An Important Bridge

This has been a great day, as we meandered home to Fredonia, we had a short stop by the  Navajo Bridge, which we found out consisted of two steel arch bridges that cross the mighty Colorado River near Lee’s Ferry.

Back in 1873 , Lees Ferry, at the mouth of Glen Canyon was the only way to cross the Colorado river in this area.  When car came around, Lee Ferry wasn;t so safe, so in 1929, they built a bridge.

The original bridge was closed to vehicular traffic and opened only for pedestrian and equestrian use once the new bridge was opened in 1995 allowing travel into a remote region north of the Colorado River including the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Cool stop, watching the might river flow underneath us.
