Farewell Petersburg

6 June 2022 – (posted 6 June 2022!)

At 2345 tonight, we board our “old friend” the Matanuska for the third time on this adventure. Tonight we are enroute to Juneau and will arrive at 0400 on 8 June 2022. We will be in Alaska’s capital city until 5 July!

The Lanning’s farewell thoughts as we leave Petersburg:

Even though we did not catch any salmon on Mitkof Island, it was exciting when we were fishing and a mother moose crossed the river behind us with her 2 small babies. Delores loved the drive to the Dry Straits Overlook and the wonderful view.

Ann Marie’s Farewell thoughts:

Of the last three islands we have stayed at, Wrangell is my favorite. The friendliness of the people, the terrain and wildlife and last but not least the weather has been fantastic. On to Juneau! Thinking about today’s events, laundry was on the top of my priority list. As I sat waiting for my laundry to finish washing at the laundromat, I thought of our dear friend June Wise who loved going to laundromats and talking to people there. Looking at the few people here, I just could not get into June’s sweet southern hospitable mode and strike up a conversation.

One guy looked high and ran around the washers, went into the storage area and came out with a large trash bag and then just disappeared. An elderly lady kept looking slyly at a vehicle parked outside. No good vibes from her. Another lady breezed in and out. Just before my clothes had finished drying a young man came in and he was too busy on his phone. So June, I know you are looking down saying “now Ann Marie you should have tried” and I would have to say Nope, not this time June.

George’s farewell thoughts of leaving Petersburg:

Petersburg is our third port of call, and by far a different type of island than the other two. I think it is because fishing and money are king here. There are three canneries and many fisherman. Which means, they are no more local than we are. They are here to work, and the businesses cater to those fisherman. Not a bad thing for them, nor did we have any problems, but there was no home town, slow down, and it does not have the local feel of Wrangel . Lots of bustle in this small town. Not to say the folks we interacted with were rude, they just didn’t have the same Mayberry RFD feeling. Wrangel is my favorite stop so far, we camped at and saw some beautiful views, and the folks were great!
