Big Bend National Park, Texas

We arrived to the Maverick RV Park in Lajitas, TX about 330pm from Del Rio. We had a 6 hour, 300 mile drive via all secondary roads, which we love to drive. The last 80 miles or so the posted speed limit was 45mph, with the last 20 miles having 15% grades…towing our 18k lb house.

Don’t be scared, the BFT can handle it. The landscape and the elevation has changed a bunch. We are now in the Chihuahuan desert of West Texas at about 2700 feet. When we leave for Fort Davis next Monday, we will be at over 5000 feet.

Nice park big RV Park so this will be a good stop.

Today we took FM 170 “the River Road” towards Persidio and it would be one of the most stunning drives we’d ever seen. The drive took us out of Lajitas and Big Bend Ranch State Park, all the while hugging the Rio Grande along the Mexican border. No border “wall” needed here, it is very remote…This route was designated by the National Geographic as one of the most scenic routes in America. Wow, it did not disappoint. Many times we were comparing this drive to that of being in Alaska (without the snow), Utah, and Idaho. ONE of our all time favorite drives.

The geology was gorgeous and constantly changing. The areas around the Rio Grande were lush and green, alive with the river water. Sometimes the river seemed to meander through the caverns and other times there were some class 3 and 4 rapids. Just on the other side of the road we could see rolling, desert hills. There are some great access points to the river, and some great stops for photos of the hoodoos and closed canyons.
