This Valley is on “Fire”

Well not literally…..

An unrelated tidbit I heard on the news this morning,

At the  Saguaro  National Park outside of Tuscon, the National Park Service is  embedding a tracking microchip into their prized Saguaros . The Saguaro  are lucrative on the black market as they fetch $100 per foot and they are being stolen. And remember, it takes about 60 years before a Saguaro  begins to grow it “arms”.

Valley of Fire State Park

We headed north  about 50 miles towards our next destination, The Valley of Fire is located in the Mojave Desert approximately 50 miles Northeast of the Las Vegas Strip. Valley of Fire is the oldest Nevada State Park and was dedicated in 1935.  In fact the state almost sold it in 1955 as they did not have enough money for upkeep.

Valley of Fire State Park covers an area of approximately 35,000 acres and was named for the magnificent red sandstone formations that were formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of the dinosaurs. These brilliant sandstone formations can appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun’s rays.

As we entered the park, there was a Lamborghini ahead of us. When I pulled up to the kiosk,  I asked the Ranger about the car and he said they are used to seeing high dollar cars and limos in the park. Remember, Vegas is right down the street….

This park was laid out just like we like’em.  A good “loop” road that we can drive and sight see,  plus many overlooks with short hikes. This park had it all, and the colors were awesome.

We found their campground nestled between the rocks, while it was tight for a big 40 footer like us, we could have done it! I hope to dry camp in areas like that when we visit through Utah.  Look closely, there is a camper just to  the right of center in the picture below.

The temps were nice but boy it was windy. The colors in this landscape was nothing short of amazing. Once the white fluffy clouds (scientific name) rolled in,  they really enhanced our view and pictures.

I hope you enjoy the photos as much as we liked taking them.
