Seattle is a little High

I wrote that Spokane was trying to reinvent itself as a city, while how is this for a comparison.

Logging was Seattle’s first major industry, then shipbuilding , then the gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. After World War II  there  was (is) Boeing , then Microsoft , then  Amazon and of course Starbucks. Not a bad resume….and the folks in Spokane say “Spokane doesn’t suck “LOL…

We drove about an hour south to a big parking garage, right downtown by Pikes Market. People walking everywhere with and against traffic, browsing hundreds of sidewalk vendors . We walked about 5 blocks north to the Monorail station, where we hopped on the monorail that was built for the Worlds Fair in 1962. Within 3 minutes, it took us to the space needle also with the same lineage.

We got our first up close view of the Space Needle and we were a little underwhelmed. It is not as tall as I thought, it needs paint, and just not as cool as I thought it would look.  To Seattle’s credit, they are, and have been remodeling the the needle, so now the observation deck  (which just opened) has glass walls that lean out and away. The revolving restaurant is closed for the renovation. Once to the top, it was an awesome view of the Puget Sound and surrounding city-scape. The clouds were high, (like some people here), it was drizzling, but the views were great. BTW, Seattle average 71 sunny days per year, so maybe smoking pot “brightens” things up a bit!

Speaking of “High” it is very weird walking around the city smelling pot, and seeing folks just sitting around smoking pot. Those people should thank the 60s and 70s…

Next we went next door to the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit showcasing the studio glass of Dale Chihuly. The exhibit opened May 21, 2012 and as you walk through both the interior gallery and the outdoor gardens the glasswork is really amazing.
