One Confusing Staircase

This has been an action packed day. Glenn Canyon Dam, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Navajo Bridge, and now we are heading home about 80 miles or so. Beautiful country out here, Utah is amazing.

As a side note, one National Park we wanted to go to was the Grand Staircase -Escalante National Monument. We went to a visitor center in Kanab, Ut,  a few days ago, got our passport book stamped and thought I got educated about the park .

Well after some time, driving home from Navajo bridge, parallel to the road on our north side are these huge cliffs, the Vermilion Cliffs.  Then we see a sign about entering Grand Staircase -Escalante National Monument, hmm what, where are we?  So we stop and take in the scenery and read the national park information board with map, and now I get it. This park is so big, 1.8 million acres, it has three visitors centers.

The “staircase” actually begins a Bryce  at about 12000 feet tall, and steps down through the Pink Cliffs, Gray Cliffs, White Cliffs, Vermilion Cliffs, Chocolate Cliffs, down to the Grand Canyon.

I did not realize the enormity of this park, nor the geologic structure. Now I get it, while the Vermilion Cliffs is a National Monument, it is apart of The Grand Staircase!
