Hiking to the Toadstools

We are off to visit Page, AZ again. Only about 85 miles east to the home of the Glenn Canyon Dam, the mighty Colorado river, and Lake Powell. I had read about a nice hike located  about 20 miles west of Page call the “Toadstools” (37.101310, -111.873169). A land of balanced rock formations which look like mushrooms, located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (hmm remember this).

So we put on our hiking attire, including sticks, filled up the rucksack with water, and off we went.

Like most places of interests here, we are at the opening of a canyon, and the Toadstools are at the end of it. So after we signed in at the trail head, off we go, at first following a semi  dry wash, as it had rained a few days ago. But we are safe !!

The trail weaved around the wash, gaining in elevation only about 100 feet, all the while we were amazed at the patterns on the canyon wall from millennia of erosion.

The trail narrowed in places as it rounded a hill with a nice drop off to the bottom. Ann Marie was not too keen about that, but she pushed through…..

Right when the trail seemed to end (it was well marked up to now), we saw nothing, until we went around and up the hill  and there was one toadstool standing proudly, we made it!

As we circled the huge rock formation to get close to the toadstool, we looked up, there was what looked like a wolf or coyote, laying in one the rock caves, seemly guarding his territory.

And then we heard the folks hiking up ahead, “Here Sugar”! Yep, part Shepard/Husky, very friendly and made my wife happy, as she my dog whisperer!!!

These folks are from Huntington Beach, CA. We told them we were there during Christmas.  That when we there where so many sting ray problems along the beach, stinging many surfers. The guy said, “yep” lifted is right foot and showed us were he got stung in the ankle at that same beach… He said it hurt, whatever…..

After talking and hiking around looking at different rock formations, as we got ready to hit the trail,  and another couple asked us to take of photo of them with their camera. I said, why don’t you take a selfie, where is your I phone”? No really I said “sure”, then asked her about her hat that had “Mecum Driver” on it. They have 55 T Bird, and their club volunteered to drive at one of their auctions. Said it was a great time driving so many cars they didn’t have to buy.

Back to the hike back, we  learned a few things about the route on the way in, so the return trip was a little “easier”!

Back at the BFT we went to Walmart for a few items, then on to Lake Powell Resort for a boat tour.
