BLM (by Virgin, UT)
I walked down the hill and met our BLM neighbor, George met George.. Okay I will remember his name. They are fulltimers from Wyoming. Nice folks, and he tells me about a nice scenic drive.
So the next morning, we start on Kolob Reservoir Road, which is the least traveled of the main roads through Zion National Park, and provides an easy way to quickly reach the wilderness. It offered great views of distant cliffs and valleys, with varied landscapes reflecting the wide elevation range of 3,550 to 8,106 feet.
The road offered views in every direction, with many ranches, and log cabins dotted around the fir trees, many used as summer homes.
Once we reached the top, there was still snow from a front that hit us two days ago. We took a muddy dirt road, “saluting” the sign that said, “Use Caution as road is not maintained”. We ended up going to the Lava Point, the highest summit in the park except for two peaks in the far northwest region, and affords exceptional, near 360° views of the whole park. Wow what a view, the huge domes of Zion Canyon itself are clearly visible, and only one other couple there looking around. No one begging for money like in Vegas…
We then headed back to the reservoir, where a couple of fisherman had just landed a big rainbow trout. Boy it was cold up there, about 40 degrees and very windy, while it was almost 80 down the hill back home. We were welcomed home by a warm sunset.
