The Bread Basket
Saskatoon, Canada |
We left Winnipeg, Manitoba after one night and headed west, straight into a head wind (again) that saw us getting 6.6 mpg….. We stopped for fuel 3 times during our 556 mile journey. This is the flattest land that I have ever driven any distance on. For as far as you can see, for 9 hours, there was nothing but (brown) fields, highways, and blue skies. Thank God for the blue sky! There was absolutely nothing, so we just kept driving, and before we knew it we were at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
I’m sure the prairies are awesome in the summer, with the flowing colors of the wheat (brown), canola ( “Can” for Canada, and “ola” for oil) (green/light yellow) lentils (green/brown), flax (yellow), barley (light gold), oats (green/ yellow brown), and mustard (ah mustard). Well you get my drift, with hundreds of miles of different color grain growing it has to be better than looking at dirt…….just sayin..
The Saskatchewan province has the largest known potash deposits in the world. Potash which contains potassium, is one of three minerals in plant fertilizer. Some of mines are 1200 meters deep and when the crystal like rock is removed it is a brown/white color. The brown is the potash and the white is salt. Potash is everywhere…
For you hockey fans, we are staying at the Gordon (Gordie) Howe Campground, yep they like their hockey up here. But it is a nice campground, even though they don’t turn the water “on” until 1 May, due to the temps. We brought our own water thank you.
