Manchester Center, VT
Bennington battle monument is the tallest structure in Vermont to commemorate the revolutionary war battle in August 16, 1777 that changed the course of history. Stone wall is 7 foot thick at the bottom. We took an elevator up to the observation platform and what a speculator view. Three states can be seen.
Farmers market… Smallest we have ever been to. We like going to these as you can really get a feel for the locals. These folks are very earthy “green” people. Hydroponics, no fertilizer, all natural, yada, yada, yada….AM bought some baby bok-choy and ramps. Don’t know what they are, but she is an amazing cook and it will be good……A hillbilly band was playing and it was a very laid back event.
Robert Frost’s House…. Cool little house, could not take pictures inside….for poetry it is okay. He and Edgar were the only two I could read as a kid…. and didn’t understand any of it.
Stopped at the Sugar Shack……Yeup everything is legal in the Green Mountains ! Okay, it was just a maple syrup joint. We walked though the door and a young lady was a holding a piping hot strawberry/rhubarb pie with her oven mitts. She just took it out of the oven and going to place it in the display case and we got a whiff of goodness. We told her this was fate and box the pie, it was ours. But, it was too hot to box, so we chatted for awhile and also bought some maple syrup. They still use the tap and bucket in the 200 acres (?) of trees. Lots of work, but wow it is good.
Went to Hildene, in Manchester, which was the Lincoln Family home until 1975. There are no more direct descendants of Honest Abe and crazy Mary.
Abraham and Mary Lincoln had 3 kids, oldest son Robert, bought 500 acres and had a beautiful summer home built. Robert was a lawyer, served as Secretary of War under Pres Garfield. He was on Us Grants staff during the civil war, and made millions from the Pullman Train Car company.
Beautiful estate, and one my ancestors (Pres Taft) stayed there during a visit.
