We left the next morning about 1130 to go into town and do some grocery shopping and visit the petroglyph walls. Well they’re not really walls, the petroglyphs were carved into induvial stones laying on the
beach in this one certain area. We had to wait for the tide to go out.
We were looking for the 1000 year old carvings without much luck when a young local man who was getting ready to go fishing in his canoe told Virgil and Delores I’ve been here all my life (he looked about 16) and he started pointing them out, saying they’re right here, and right there, right here and right there. Of course we had walked over some of them and didn’t see them.
Ann Marie was in her happy place on a beach, which was full of stones but it was also full of various kinds of Seaglass. She filled up a quart zippy bag before we left and that typically doesn’t happen, so she got a good haul.
As we’re walking to the IGA store in downtown Wrangell, we happened upon a covered pavilion with two “old” ladies standing behind a 12×12 rough wood counter. I asked what they were selling and they replied strawberry shortcake! Well, serve us up four please!
They are members of the American Legion Chapter, and were also giving out their iconic red poppies to veterans. We start asking them a bunch of questions about the town, listening to some stories and found out that one of the ladies husband was in the Navy, so her and Virgil hit it off strong. We walked away with a full belly just before we were going to the grocery store, perfect timing.
Remember we could not get any maps at the visitor’s center because it was closed? While we were checking out at the IGA, Delores spots a USFS Ranger! I positioned myself outside the IGA door, and when Jimmy got outside, I asked him a bunch of questions. He said sure, come over to my office I have some maps! Well, his office is a USFS white F-150 pickup truck! We all gathered around his truck door, like he was giving out candy!
Jimmy was great, he provided us some maps and showed us some remote fishing and camping spots.
We were on way with a few bags of groceries and maps as we drove to a flat pull off area right outside of town on the waters edge for the night. Boondocking is awesome and that is where we pounded in stakes for the night.
What a view!!!
