Looking for Big Foot?
Wembley, Canada |
Disclaimer, I did not make up the title, George did. We left the Walmart parking lot in Edmonton after a really restful nights sleep.
Today’s drive was much different than the last few days. Instead of all flat grain fields, there are allot of oil and gas fields. Plus more cattle and horse ranching as we started to drive to the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Nice ride, more frost heaves, but much better fuel millage (8.6 mpg). We are heading to Wemberly Alberta to visit a museum George researched and thought would be fun to visit, the Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum. Yes I know another museum.
A little background on this museum… The futuristic building opened in Sept 2015 just west of Grande Prairie contains a rare collection of dinosaur specimens, and with many interactive exhibits, a fossil lab and helicopter tours to nearby Pipestone Creek – one of the world’s densest dinosaur bone bed sites and the reason for the museum’s existence. Dan Aykroyd (Canadian) played a big part in raising $$ for this place, and nope we did not take the copter ride, maybe that is why we did not find bogfoot…… We arrived at around 3:30 and the sign on the door said they closed at 6pm so we figured we would have enough time to see everything. We got our tickets and opted, for a nominal charge, to see a National Geographic film about the “Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure”. The film started at 4pm and was very well done. It told a story of how a family of Dolichorhynchops informally known as Dollies began their lives and ended as a fossils.
The museum had quite a few complete fossils with an easy to understand explanation of when and where this creatures lived. An interactive area for children to hunt for bones and area that you can watch researchers with fossils cleaning and preserving them.
We asked the clerk if we could spend the night in their parking lot and she responded with “yes, but at your own risk”. I replied, “Oh, is there a problem with dinosaurs around here?” She wasn’t amused, but I thought it was pretty dam funny myself.
All in all not too bad.
