Canada’s only all-season public road to cross the Arctic Circle, and to the Artic Ocean is the Dempster Highway. This very, very remote hwy took us on 544 miles of unpaved road where we saw the most unexpected and the most beautiful scenery on the planet. We started near Dawson City and drove north (yes north!) to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories to Tuktoyaktuk.
The drive up the Dempster to the Arctic Ocean took 3 days. The first day from Dawson City we drove 161 miles in 7-1/2 hours and overnighted at a beautiful roadside viewing area at Ogilvie Ridge. Unfortunately I did not turn on my dashcam for the first leg of this journey, which of course had the worst road conditions of the journey so far.
The second day took us to Eagle Plains which is the only fuel on the Dempster and we continued to the Arctic Circle, and stopped for the night at Fort McPherson, NWT. The 3rd day took us across two river crossing, the Peel River and the Mackenzie River, up to Inuvik, and then to Tuktoyaktuk at the Arctic Ocean.
I finally got my icloud pictures to work and have pictures and some stories to share at a later date. We are leaving Tuktoyaktuk today (17 Aug) and heading back down the Dempster, eventually getting on the AlCan towards Whitehorse, Yukon . Statesboro, Ga is 4632 miles away for us and for Virgil and Delores to Spencer, IN is 3955 miles.
