Acadia National Forest

Acadia National Forest
Bar Harbor, ME
Bar Harbor, ME We have been told that a must stop is the Acadia National Forest. We would not be disappointed, so off we go. When you look at this island we are on, Mount Desert, I know the name doesn’t fit, it seems like it is all split up by the bays and there is no way it all can be connected together but it is. We went to the Ranger Station at Acadia and got our passbook stamped. We bought this passbook a number of years ago and when you visit a National Park you get it stamped with the date you visited. A good way to remember where you have been. A ranger gave us a map and highlighted the must see stops in the park. First stop Cadillac Mountain. The drive up the mountain was indescribable. You slowly reached an elevation of 1,530 feet driving along the side of the mountain on a winding narrow road. Instead of guard rails they have granite boulders on the sides of the cliffs. So the mountain is made entirely of granite and when you reach the top you have a 360 degree view of the area. Bays, cities, ocean and forests as far as the eye can see.
We walked on a pathway around the top and stopped and took many many pictures. The weather was cloudy with a nice gusty breeze.
It was interesting to see the types of vegetation that are able to survive in this environment. The birch trees that at sea level reach 30-40 feet barely were four feet high. Alpine vegetation is very hardy. After an early dinner at Jordan Pond we headed home. Tomorrow we are going to Bass Harbor. The locals call it slower paced and a good place to get fresh seafood!
